Fokupers conducts training on “GBV Prevention and Referral Mechanism” at Balibo Secondary School

Balibo, 28 May 2026 – Fokupers conducted training on Gender Based Violence Prevention (GBV) and Referral Mechanisms to students at Dom Martinho Secondary School Balibo Villa, Bobonaro Municipality. 40 students, (29 females and 11 males).

This workshop aimed to raise students’ knowledge and awareness about gender equality, GBV prevention, and the importance of protecting women and girls. The outreach gave participants an understanding of the different forms of violence that can occur in families, schools, and communities, as well as steps that can be taken to prevent and address them.

Fokupers presented several speakers who play an important role in the protection system for victims of GBV. Sergeant Elvira Tavares from the Police Vulnerable Persons Protection Unit (VPU) shared information about the VPU’s role and responsibility in dealing with cases of GBV violence, particularly those involving women and vulnerable groups. She also explained case reporting procedures and the importance of supporting victims to find protection and justice.Ms. Margareta Kune Fatima, Focal Point for the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion (MSSI), explained MSSI’s role in providing support and care to victims of GBV. She stressed the importance of coordination between institutions and organizations to ensure that victims have access to the services they need, including social and psychological support, and appropriate referral mechanisms.

Through this outreach, Fokupers encourages students not to turn a blind eye to the various forms of violence happening around them. Young people are encouraged to have the courage to speak up, seek help, and seek support according to existing networks when encountering or witnessing cases of violence.

Further, participants were encouraged to recognize the signs and different forms of violence, understand their impact on victims, and contribute to the creation of a safe, respectful, inclusive, and discrimination-free environment. Youth awareness and involvement is considered important to build a culture that rejects all forms of violence.

Fokupers believes that young people have an important role as agents of change in efforts to prevent GBV. Therefore, this outreach activity becomes a crucial learning space for new generations with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to promote gender equality and a culture against violence in families, schools, and communities.

This activity, with the support of MISEREOR, is part of a shared commitment to strengthen the protection of women and girls and encourage the creation of a more just, safe, and equal society for all.
